To be honest, I was blown away not that the activity was happening, but that the first few paragraphs contained so much vocabulary that I had no clue what they were talking about! It was like reading a foreign language. I need to remember that when working with my staff!

Kia ora Will!

I have recently returned from the NetSafe Conference 2008, an action packed 3 day conference that I'm still <a href="http://newmiddle-earth.blogspot.com/2008/07/netsafe-conference-2008-queenstown-july.html" rel="nofollow">reporting on</a>.

I'd say you've just about got it right if what I learnt from that conference is anything to go by. What were the issues discussed? Cyber bullying, predation, child porn, privacy breaches. You name them. There all there!

I have a problem with this statement "That the Internet is now capacious enough to host an entire subculture of users who enjoy undermining its founding values is yet another symptom of its phenomenal success." Founding values? The Internet was originally meant to be a defense communication network with no single point of failure. The reality is that the success of both its virtuous side and its sidious side are spawned from the same basic neutral principle: We as a people will always find use of whatever technology we can get our hands on, to do whatever we wanted to do.

The root of the problem is not the success or failure of the technology or whatever its "founding values" are. The root of the problem is us. People choose to do what they do. All virtuous acts online are act of users, users like us. All sidious acts online are act of users, users like us.
