I think that blogging is important, and everybody should (and everybody can) aim to make it great. I think that if school children try to do some blogging from time to time, their language becomes better, their spelling is good, and even the way they think is smarter.

[...] Weblogg-ed is musing about what makes a blog that he likes, and in the process points to some interesting ed blogs. But what really amused me about his post, is his dawning awareness of the link between people working with technology to effect change, and people thinking about transformative education. It may be that in theological education we’ve been up against more skepticism about technology and so have made common cause that much earlier than regular education. I’m not sure.
[...] The Education Reform Fronts: Out There and In Here - A great post on blogging, technology and education (via Mary at Tensegrities, with further comments). What is clear from this discussion is that technology (and the deconstruction of resistance to it) clarifies the issues at stake in education. Taken seriously and at its best, blogging plays an important role in this. This quote represents a pretty good summary of how I feel about this. “I am firmly in the camp that blogging (the verb) starts with reading, and that great blogging is using the text to connect ideas and patterns from sometimes disparate sources and experiences in a linked environment that allows the reader to wallow in the context of the ideas being presented. That’s not to say that posts that don’t do that aren’t worth reading. But to me, at least, that’s where the magic of this is, both as writer and as reader.” [...]

Will, thanks for the accolade. It's a group effort - making sense of things. I'm out of my comfort zone, too, but I'm pushing myself to understand what's happening because I think the politics and economics of globalization is a really big problem. Bigger than just education reform. My son, who is 12, asked me the other day if I thought the world would be a good place to live when he grew up. It broke my heart to hear him ask that question. I told him that we need to work really hard right now to get some things figured out. That's all I know for sure.

Hi Will
My own thinking about the 2.0 technology is not that it forces us out of the classroom or the school - that it can and will - but that for those like you and I who use it a lot - it creates attachment and engagement.

Is this what has been squeezed out as we have become more dirigiste at school?

Might not conversation and hence its product - engagement be the underpinning?
