Tim Lauer recently pointed to Picnik and after just a few seconds of playing around I already love it from every angle. It’s free online photo editing, it does more than iPhoto (which is one of the few things I haven’t liked about my MacBook), it integrates with Flickr in a snap, and it’s got a healthy dose of Web as app wackiness about it. (Just read the phrases that come up as you create and account and upload photos.)
So I ask, seriously, are we at the point where the Web based stuff is almost as good as the pay to put on your computer stuff? Or, at the very least, is it good enough to compete with the 20% of what we actually us of the software we buy? Google Docs, Podomatic, YouTube, Zoho, JumpCut, now this…
Pretty cool if you ask me.

Bah, you couldn’t have waited until Monday to post this? While preparing for one of the presentations I’m doing on Sunday at the PETE&C precon, I spent some time looking through all the different online image editing sites and discovered Picnik. It was going to be the “Best Web2.0 site you probably haven’t heard of yet”. Can’t very well say that now that you’ve blogged about it
In all seriousness, it’s definitely one of the better sites out there and really demonstrates how far ‘Office 2.0′ applications have come. For most everyday applications, I’d actually say that this is BETTER than Photoshop. A) I don’t have to download my images to the desktop in order to edit them. B) I don’t have to load up some bloated program that’s going to eat all my RAM. C) I don’t have to leave my browser, which is essentially my true workspace nowadays. D) It just feels smooth and quick.
Don’t get me wrong, there are still plenty of reasons not to delete Photoshop from the hard drive, but basic editing it’s overkill.
