I agree with Dennis about the necessary networking that blogging establishes for the student. They need this practice of writing, editing, reading, and response prior to employment.

Hmm... on blogging as "reading" rather than "writing". I would disagree. Links and comments (or at least links) are necessary to form the peer networks that create audienes, and the writing of comments and creation of links are are primarily constructive, rather than interpretive, actions.

Forming words-sentences-paragraphs you have heard (and can speak) correctly used (legibly on paper so the reader can actually recognize what it "says") is writing - but the use of a QWERTY keyboard is too. Writing with the reader in mind entails a relationship, correct? And do we use this technolgy as a bridge or as a barrier? Hmm ... I think the goal is thinking itself - ah ha! Screenagers can do this quite well, but...

I think you're right, Tom. The basics of blogging require reader response, and that's what defines this "genre" more than anything else. But that little change in how you think about it does open up some other possibilities for instruction...

In the broadest possible terms, I think blogging in the classroom will end up feeling more like "real" blogging when we think of it as a "reading" activity rather than a "writing" activity. In other words, more like reader response than composition.

Not that either is right or wrong.
