UThink: U. of Minn. Blog Initiative

Ok…that’s it. I’m officially over-the-top jealous of the ability to do this:

The libraries at the University of Minnesota have just gone live with UThink, a big blogging initiative. Every student, faculty member, and staff member will be able to have as many blogs as he or she wants. I’ve spoken to Shane Nackerud, the librarian who’s heading up the initiative, and he hopes it will be pretty big, as in students will be able to comment on campus life in such a way that the blogs might compete with or even supplant the school newspaper. Also, instructors will be able to use the system to create community blogs, students will be able to start community blogs for group projects, clubs, sororities/fraternities and organizations will be able to have community blogs, etc.

Not fair! Take a look at the suggestions they give to students on what to blog about:

  • Create a UThink blog to share your opinion on classes at the U, campus events, local or world news, or really anything! Let your opinion be heard.
Create UThink blogs for your classes, or specific papers or speeches, and easily organize your thoughts using MT’s categorization functionality. Also, find old entries quickly thanks to your blog’s built in search capabilities.

  • Use UThink blogs to keep your friends and family up to date about what you are up to. Grinnell College has been providing this kind of service to their students for years.
  • Use UThink blogs to keep track of links to important web sites used in your classes, or keep track of library index and database citations for your papers and speeches.
  • Use UThink blogs as a research tool. The more people we have logging in and posting opinions, the richer the search results will become.
  • Create a UThink blog for any student organization, club, or group you might belong to and easily keep other students up to date on your group’s activities, events, or views on a particular topic.
  • Thanks to Movable Type’s templates functionality, customize and design your blog to look any way you want.

    Blogging in Academia…K-12?

The good news is that a Blogging in Academia session has been added to the BloggerCon lineup. The not so good news is that the description shows it’s geared pretty exclusively to the post high school set; note the first line: “The modern university embodies a paradox.”

Now I didn’t read too closely, but of the 360 or so BloggerCon registrants, I’m guessing there are a handful of K-12 educators attending, and there may be some others who have an interest in the use of blogs with younger kids. So I’m wondering if some might want to convene a BOF at some point to talk issues more relevant to K-12 use. Anyone interested?
