Will, rather than putting together a system, particularly since the Fall is upon us, we're doing some different strategies:

(1) after students create their blogs, we'll have them grouped; these groups will change, of course, but initially they'll do:
(2) when a discussion question or questions is posted on the "motherBlog" or a prompt given, students will discuss / response on their own blogs, first; each group will handle a different aspect/topic; and in each group there will be 3 collaborators which will summarize and synthesize--and place this into the "motherBlog" for the class to consult;
(3) the class will then go to blogs they've not visited and begin examining and responding.

On another level,

(1) we are going to ask students to devote a portion of their blogs to "professional development": since the job of the First Year Seminar at Middlebury is also to advise students, we're going to ask students to do some "meta" writing about their wishes, selections they've made, assessments of their current courses as a way to select their Spring stuff--like that;
(2) this can go on for a couple of years, given our advising structure, lending us the opportunity to have students begin to see the potential of blogging as a life-long endeavor...

We're going to do this on Barbara's NEW blog, yet to be constructed and which will be about Irish Film and Literature (F'03).

Will,

I'd really like to put together a prototype for doing this stuff with a Zope application while Tim is up here (Tuesday and Wednesday). So if you guys can talk about requirements for your ideal class weblog system while you're all together, then Tim can pass that onto me and hopefully we can get some code down.

If I don't get anything written when Tim is here I probably won't get to it at all.
